The Burgas Airport runway will be completely rehabilitated in Winter 2025/26

More than 50 million euros will be invested in the runway to guarantee safety and ensure its readiness for year-round traffic starting in 2026.

Since the start of the concession, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD fulfilled its investment obligations and complied with all national and international safety regulations. In this regard, the concessionaire announces the plans for full rehabilitation of the runway at Burgas Airport and the resulting necessity to temporarily close the airport for six months during the winter period of 2025/26.

The runway of Burgas Airport was built in 1962 and further upgraded in 1980. From the beginning of the concession, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD took the commitment to continuously maintain the runway of Burgas Airport for its safe operation. Due to the age and the technical condition of the runway, full rehabilitation is necessary for the safety of the operations, as safety is the main unconditional priority for the company. The rehabilitation will be the basis of accommodating the expected traffic volumes for the next two decades. In order to reduce the impact on the tourist season to a minimum, the repair works will be carried out exclusively and only during the winter months – in the period of November 2025 to April 2026. It is in the interest of Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD to keep the closure period as short as possible.

In preparation for safe operation during the traffic during the summer season of 2025, there is the necessity for three weeks of runway maintenance work, which is also planned in the low-traffic month of March 2025, before the busy season. Avoiding a negative impact on traffic and tourism is the Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD’s main goal during the rehabilitation of the runway and all other repair works.

The total amount of investment is approximately 50 million euros that will be invested in the rehabilitation of the whole runway, surrounding areas, drainage, and new airfield lighting system. In addition, this occasion will be used to make a further multi-million investment in the apron areas. The planning of this project is done with internationally experienced specialists from Fraport Group and reputable external companies, conforms to the commitments of the Master Plan 2022-2026 and is in full alignment with the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria as well as with the Municipality of Burgas. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD reminds that since the beginning of the concession in 2006, more than 110 million euros have been invested in the infrastructure of Burgas Airport. This is an important part of the Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD’s commitment to upgrade the infrastructure of Burgas Airport as a modern, safe and attractive airport for airlines and passengers to continue further growing the year-round traffic and connectivity of the airport.

To continue its commitment to creating a better public understanding of the development of Burgas Airport, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD will communicate in detail all future steps in this direction with the media, municipalities, and tourism stakeholders.
